Who we are

The Visual Art Society is a non-profit organization for art  appreciation,
enhancement and learning
in the Cayman Islands.
Members of this Society are professional artists, hobbyists and people
who simply have a passion for art and like to enjoy being involved in an art
community.
More than 30 years ago a small group of artists got together to paint,
share ideas and hold exhibitions and the Visual Arts Society (VAS) was
formed.  A small building in South Sound leased from the Government
was its first home. Over the next twenty  five years  hundreds of people
attended the fine art and craft classes offered by the Society.  These
included oil painting, water colour, print making, jewelry making, framing,
batik, mosaic and pottery to name just a few.

By 2004 the VAS occupied a state of the art studio in the Eucalyptus
Building on Crewe Road where we had two kilns for pottery, an artists’
studio, a permanent gallery to display artists’ work and a shop offering the
work of members. In September 2004 our premises and their contents
were completely destroyed by Hurricane Ivan.

We have now started over. The Watler House at Pedro’s Castle is our
wonderful home and 2008/9 promises to be the first step on the road to
comeback.  In affiliation with the Tourism Attraction Board we opened the
restored Cayman house in June 2007 with a small show of works by
current members.

We are once again in a position to offer workshops in a variety of
mediums. We welcome ideas for workshops and more importantly we are
interested in hearing from artists who are interested in hosting a
workshop.

Members of the Visual Arts Society are the first to receive information on
all upcoming workshops which they can attend at a reduced cost, receive
invitations to all functions sponsored by the Visual Arts Society and any
information that is forwarded to us by other individuals or organizations
that might be of interest.

The Society is manned exclusively by volunteers.
